For Free Modding: The Abuse of Invasive Launchers
Video game modding began as a community-driven expression of creativity and shared passion, aimed at expanding the player experience without unnecessary barriers. However, forcing users to use a proprietary installer or launcher just to access a simple mod crosses the line between content distribution and invasive control over the user’s computer.
Techniques such as disguising program directories under the names of supposed Windows services (such as WinNetService), forcing system attributes and hidden files (attrib +h +s) to prevent users from seeing what’s on their own drive, and deleting .scs files as soon as the game closes constitute excessive and deceptive practices. No player should be forced to host software that operates behind the operating system’s back or be subjected to artificial DRM mechanisms just to enjoy a route in Euro Truck Simulator 2.
The files that make up a mod belong to the player’s experience in their local environment. Restricting, encrypting, and locking down content through proprietary dependencies adds no value-it only breeds suspicion, vulnerabilities, and unnecessary resource consumption.
For transparency, respect for the user, and true freedom in the community:
Content must be accessible, clean, and free of restrictions.
